Initiation – Overview for New Members
As members of the Airdrie Professional Firefighters Association, all new recruits are required to pay an initiation fee when they join the Local. This requirement is set out in Article 8 of the Association Constitution and By-Laws.
The initiation fee is calculated as two months of union dues, which for current wages works out to $429.73. Ten dollars of this amount is forwarded directly to the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) as part of your formal membership registration. Initiation fees can be paid by electronic money transfer to treasurer@airdriefirefighters.com.
The purpose of the initiation fee is administrative and organizational. It covers the cost of establishing your membership within both the Local and the IAFF and helps support the infrastructure, some of which has been invested in by current members for many years. That infrastructure includes things like:
Representing firefighters collectively
Legal representation and labour relations support
Collective bargaining and contract enforcement
Professional advocacy for firefighter safety and working conditions
Access to IAFF resources, training, and member benefits
The fee is a one-time payment and is separate from your regular monthly dues, which are deducted through payroll.
More broadly, joining the Association means becoming part of a collective organization that works to protect the profession, maintain safe staffing and working conditions, and ensure firefighters have a strong voice in the workplace - including within the department, the City as an employer, and all three orders of government. The initiation fee is an important part of that process.
